BS/MSMF Program (5-year)

Purpose: Department of Mathematics offers a five-year Bachelor of Science in Mathematics / Master of Science in Mathematical Finance BS/MS degree program. It is important to note the MS, not the BS, is the first professional degree for the practitioners of quantitative finance ("quants"). This program has been designed for currently enrolled math majors to acquire a BS/MS degree in five years rather than the standard 4 plus 1.5 (approximately) it normally requires.

Requirements: You must be an undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring in Mathematics (Probability and Statistics Track), and should have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application. Students should discuss the program and the possibility of entering with their assigned academic advisor. Applications must be submitted during your junior year. You must be admitted to the program prior to academic advising for your senior year.

Application Process: You will need to provide all the required documentation outlined on the on-line application including 2 recommenders, a UM transcript sent directly from the UM Office of the Registrar and official GRE test scores sent directly from ETS, the testing agency. An admission decision will not be made until all required application materials have been received and processed for review by the Admission Committee.

Financial Implications: Many financial aid programs, including those offered by the University, federal and state governments are restricted to the coursework required to complete an undergraduate degree. The college does, however, award a limited number of competitive MS scholarships worth up to 30% of tuition costs that can be applied toward the 5th year once you are a full-time graduate student.

Plan of Study: Please consult the Plan of Study page if you are considering applying to the BS / MSMF program.
